America Acknowledges God’s Providence

Try as they might mainstream media and history books can not refute the truth: America acknowledges God’s providence. Documents referencing God’s providence are prevalent from the beginning stages of our emerging government and they are still available for review.

This post, the second of a nine-part series highlighting one topic from each chapter of The American Covenant – The Untold Story by Dr. Marshall Foster, is dedicated to God’s providence in America.

Many Founders such as the Pilgrims, those who did battle on American soil for freedom, and still others with occupations such as preachers, merchants, lawyers, and landowners who signed the Declaration Of Independence – were Christian. Of the 56 men who signed this historic document, nearly half (24) held seminary or Bible school degrees.

Clearly their instilled Christian faith affected the Founding Fathers as they referenced God in America’s birthing documents.

The first English charter, The Charter of Virginia, issued April 10, 1606 states:

We, greatly commending and graciously accepting of, the desires of the furtherance of so noble a work, which may by the Providence of Almighty God, hereafter tend to the glory of HIs devote majesty, in propagating of Christian religion to such people, as yet live in darkness and miserable ignorance of the true knowledge and worship of God, and may in time bring the infidels and savages living in those parts, to human civility and to settled and quiet government.

America’s first constitution, the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, was written in 1683. Its preamble states:

For as much as it has pleased the Almighty God by the wise disposition of His divine Providence so to order and dispose of things…

The Declaration of the Causes and Necessity of Taking Up Arms, by the Continental Congress in July 6, 1775:

With an humble confidence in the mercies of the Supreme and impartial God and ruler of the universe, we most devoutly implore His devine goodness to protect us happily through this great conflict, and to dispose our adversaries to reconciliation on reasonable terms, and thereby to relieve the empire from the calamities of civil war.

The American Covenant – The Untold Story

As America’s founding documents continued to be drafted and approved by Christian counsels, leadership in America also continued to be woven by Christian men. Many presidents spoke of the necessity for providence in order for our nation to succeed:

“It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor.” – President George Washington

“…we can not fail, under the favor of a gracious Providence.” – President James Monroe

“America seeks no empires built on blood and force ….The legions which she sends forth are armed, not with the sword, but with the Cross.” – President John Calvin Coolidge

“We are a nation under God, and I believe God intended for us to be free.” – President Ronald Reagan

The Christian Post

“We will not break, we will not yield, we will never give in, we will never give up, we will never, ever, ever back down. As long as we are confident and united, the tyrants we are fighting do not stand a chance, because we are Americans and Americans kneel to God, and God alone.” – President Donald Trump

Early in the building of our country leaders saw and confirmed the need for children to know our Judeo-Christian God. As Congress, who highly respected God’s Word, began making laws and decisions to better our country, they saw the need to continue biblically educating America’s children. In 1782 Congress took action and approved the printing of Bibles to be used in schools :

“The Congress of the United States recommends and approves the Holy Bible for use in all schools.”

The Christian Heritage of America

These examples are just a small reference to America acknowledging God’s providence. Today, with major institutions choosing to ignore the truth of God’s providence in America, it remains the Christian’s responsibility to choose to share this truth with others, specifically our children.

America, from the beginning, has acknowledged God’s providence and may we never forget that – lest He forget us.
