If you are a Christian you know God is in control at all times. God knows the beginning, middle and the end of our stories. Yet Christians also know the reality of satan’s continual plot to exploit our lives as he tries to entice, manipulate, and yank us away from our faith in all that God is. And satan doesn’t limit his lure to individuals. He also attacks families, groups, businesses and governments–including the government of the United States.
Satan would love nothing more than for American citizens to completely ignore God’s call.
Thankfully, I believe America will never allow evil to overcome. We have always worshiped and relied upon God as we acknowledge His power and holiness. In fact the birth of America began with an agreement with God. This agreement was created in 1620.
The Mayflower Compact:
In the name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, King, defender of the Faith, etc.: Having undertaken, for the Glory of God, and advancements of the Christian faith, and the honor of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the Northern parts of Virginia; do by these presents, solemnly and mutually, in the presence of God, and one another; covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic; for our better ordering, and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame, such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general good of the colony; unto which we promise all due submission and obedience. In witness whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names at Cape Cod the 11th of November, in the year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord King James, of England, France, and Ireland, the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth, 1620
From the beginning, before America had established states, bodies of law or a president, the original colonists who risked their lives to build a new colony signed a document showing they stood firm in the Lord and His word.
The Pilgrims had great faith. They no doubt followed Ephesians 6:10.
Ephesians 6:10 A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
The Pilgrims that forged America had to be strong in the Lord. They were in constant battle with the forces against them: weather, lack of knowledge about the area, and tempers that no doubt flared amongst themselves.
Ephesians 6:12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
The ability to grow and expand their idea of a new world was in constant peril against evil, just as America, though fully formed today, is in constant peril with evil. Evil never wants righteous people-those who seek to do good-to succeed. So what action can Americans take today that our brave Pilgrims surely took for themselves all those years ago?
Put on the full armor of God.
Ephesians 6:13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
Ephesians 6:14-15 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
Ephesians 6:16-17 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Christians do not run!
God’s armor prepares us to battle evil’s plots against us. With God’s armor in place we are able to stand against evil as we wear the belt of truth–Jesus. Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the life.” Jesus is the first and most important piece of preparedness against evil.
The second piece of armor, the breastplate of righteousness, protects our hearts from evil–”Above all else protect your heart, because everything you do flows from it.”
Next, the gospel of peace keeps us grounded. We are assured the gospel of Jesus’ death on the cross and His resurrection always gives us peace to be rooted in. Nothing can ever take that peace from Christians.
A Christian’s shield of faith protects from the flaming arrow lies satan shoots at us. Faith in Jesus allows those lies to never penetrate us. And because we will never be overpowered we can remain strong, able to fight back.
The helmet of salvation is also protection, a reminder–”Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…”. When we become Christians we relinquish love for this world and acknowledge a newness of thought. What Jesus did for us, believing He alone offers salvation, is the only thing that should matter.
The last part of “the full armor of God” is the sword of the Spirit. It is with the sword of the Spirt, our only weapon, that we fight our battles:
Hebrews 4:14 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Christians, adorn yourself in God’s armor. Prepare yourself and utilize His full protection over your mind and spirit. Pray that evil forces battling against America do not prevail. We can not rely on man or our government alone to save America from evil. We, just as the Pilgrims did in the Mayflower Compact, must place our faith “by the Grace of God,” trusting His plan for goodness will prevail.
“In the name of God, Amen.“
If you’re not certain you’ve ever invited Jesus into your heart, now is the perfect time. Pray this sinner’s prayer found at Gotquestions.com. Through Jesus you will receive the strength and peace that He alone offers to help you through these troubled times.
“God, I know that I am a sinner. I know that I deserve the consequences of my sin. However, I am trusting in Jesus Christ as my Savior. I believe that His death and resurrection provided for my forgiveness. I trust in Jesus and Jesus alone as my personal Lord and Savior. Thank you Lord, for saving me and forgiving me! Amen!”
