“There comes a time in the affairs of men when they must prepare to defend, not their homes alone, but the tenets of faith and humanity on which their churches, their governments, and their very civilization are founded.
The defense of religion, of democracy, and of good faith among nations is all the same fight. To save one we must now make up our minds to save all.” President Franklin D. Roosevelt
President Roosevelt included those words in his State of the Union address to Congress in 1939, two years before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Clearly, Roosevelt understood the importance of keeping God in high esteem within the family and within governments.
So why does it seem our government has abandoned God?
I believe the answer isn’t easy and the change to abandon God did not happen quickly.
Yes, the United States was founded on God at our birth by the covenant of the Mayflower Compact. This compact was made by Pilgrims with God and with each other long before local, state or federal governments were ever enacted. As time went on evidence proves America continued to favor God. Bible verses and religious statues carved or written in stone are found in cities across our great country and throughout our nation’s capital.
As new officials were elected into political positions this meant new ideas were brought into play. Not every elected official is Christian. Not every elected official clearly views the importance of a moral code handed down by the finger of God or even the difference between right and wrong as vital to America’s survival.
It’s those immoral, wrongdoing and unprincipled views that have infiltrated American families and government, oftentimes presented in ways as to benefit our country when in fact they actually have created a void between us and God. That void results in separation from God–loss of His favor.
Jeremiah 2:11-13 Has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their glorious God for worthless idols. Be appalled at this, you heavens, and shudder with great horror,” declares the LORD. “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
America is falling further and further from God. We should all be concerned about the direction we are heading. And concern should lead to choice. We either decide we are too far gone, believing the chaos satan has caused and declare him winner, or, as Christians, we believe what Jesus taught and the truths God speaks continually through the Bible:
Repentance Brings Us Closer To God
Luke 15:7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.
God Is Faithful
Deuteronomy 7:9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.
God Wants Us To Succeed
Matthew 25:23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
The Bible clearly explains mankind is to turn to our Maker in every situation. Every situation includes personal, family, and work life. Every situation also includes turning to God to make right our government because our government surly affects all aspects of American life.
Only God Can Save Our Nation
We can’t trust in mankind to save our nation from the likes of pandemics, racism, violence in the streets or government fraud. But we can trust in God’s power to stir the hearts of believers and call to Him sincerely in prayer and repentance for our nation. Ask Him to place in power law makers, leaders and judges who will choose to do God’s will. Rely on Him, placing all concerns for America at the foot of the cross.
Only God can save our nation, and He can do it through us, Christians humbly on our knees confessing our sin.
You can start today by praying the following prayer:
Dear Lord, I praise Your holy name. I praise You for allowing America to prosper, enjoy freedoms, and worship You freely. But I acknowledge as a country we are turning our back to You. We are changing Your natural order, incorporating our own corrupt ideas, not Your holy commandments, into America's daily life. We are sorry. Please forgive us. Hear our prays as we ask that Your mercy and grace shine upon us. Please allow us to elect leaders who love and respect You so that America may once again be governed by people who respect and follow Your word. May You forever be held in highest esteem by American families and our government. Amen.
ARE YOU A FOLLOWER OF JESUS?
If you’re not certain you’ve ever invited Jesus into your heart, now is the perfect time. Pray this sinner’s prayer found at Gotquestions.com. Through Jesus you will receive the hope that He alone offers.
“God, I know that I am a sinner. I know that I deserve the consequences of my sin. However, I am trusting in Jesus Christ as my Savior. I believe that His death and resurrection provided for my forgiveness. I trust in Jesus and Jesus alone as my personal Lord and Savior. Thank you Lord, for saving me and forgiving me! Amen!”
