Over the past decades, society has willingly and enthusiastically decided exclaiming Oh My G**! is: pertinent, necessary and acceptable in everyday conversations. However, because of the definition of God, and the way I understand our LORD’s third commandment, I must disagree.

In order to better follow Jewish culture and show respect for God’s name, Matthew, the author of the book Matthew, chose to use heaven instead of God in his message. He understood Jewish reverence for the name God, for this reason Jews avoided mentioning His sacred name.
The Apostle Matthew was himself Jewish, and a former tax collector by trade. Tax collectors were despised for being cheats. Sitting in their tax booths while working for Rome, they extorted monies from the locals. Any money they collected over and above what Roman government required, they kept for themselves. After Jesus Christ resurrected, the new church was quick to expand. His new followers called Christians, had the mission of spreading the Good News: Jesus has authority over death! Their greeting to each other reflected this truth.
When two Christians would meet, one would say: “He is risen.” The other would respond with: “He is risen, indeed!” Today, that exchange is often repeated by pastor and congregation in church services throughout the world.
