America is going though some tough times right now: a pandemic the media won’t report clear data on, elections called under questionable factors, and families and businesses trying to navigate new normals. If you are not a true believer, tough times may lead you to experience doubt in our God.

But don’t doubt–don’t be a Doubting Thomas.

Doubting Thomas is a nickname derived from the story in the book of John. It’s when Jesus, after being crucified and buried, rises from the grave and appears to most of His disciples in a room with locked doors. Thomas, a disciple not present, was later told by those that stood among Jesus what they experienced.

It’s hard to place ourselves in Thomas’s shoes, but think about what you believe, America, then think about Thomas.

Here was a man who spent roughly three years with Christ during His ministry on earth. Thomas was privy to Jesus’ miracles of calming storms, restoring sight to the blind, feeding 5,000 on a hill with a few fish and some bread, even raising three others from the dead.

But, not unlike many Americans who need proof of God’s power, Thomas did not believe what his friends told him.

John 20:24-29 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

Have you thought about what you believe in, America?

I believe America is a nation created as, “One Nation Under God.” I can vaguely remember high school history books reporting battles our soldiers won by the skin of their teeth. But not until I did some research for this post did I find more information. Check out 7 Moments of Divine Intervention in US History, to learn about the times God’s favor was upon America.

Perhaps once citizens who doubt God’s power during our problematic state of affairs have proof that God is always here to help fight our battles, perhaps then doubters will become believes, just as Thomas believed when he had the proof stand right in front of him.

A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

America, I encourage you to not doubt our Lord. God is faithful. He has purpose and plans for our families, churches, businesses, and even our government. We are indeed a nation formed by God; our forefathers believed and trusted in His sovereignty.

We have come this far, since 1620 when our soil was dedicated to God, calling for God’s mercy and grace. May we continue praying He holds us in His righteous hand.

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. “All who rage against you will surely be ashamed and disgraced; those who oppose you will be as nothing and perish. Though you search for your enemies, you will not find them. Those who wage war against you will be as nothing at all. For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.
