Post #6 – As Reported From The Book Of Luke
BREAKING — It has recently been documented that Jesus, acknowledged by prophets Simeon and Anna to be the world’s redeemer, has been accused of Sabbath-breaking. Unhappy with His actions are the local Pharisees and teachers of the law. They are the ones confronting Jesus and questioning, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”
Jesus’ quick, steadfast response is quoted as: “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
God’s law versus man-made law.
The charge results from an initial incident which occurred in the grain fields. Jesus and His disciples were spotted picking heads of grain. This act of breaking a man-made law by doing work under the category of “harvesting” on the Sabbath, was noticed by the Pharisees.
Additionally, the hungry group of men broke a more specific man-made law when they actually rubbed the heads of grain in their hands. This process, known to break away the chaff, allows for the separating and eating of the kernel.
Documentation reveals God’s law mandates farmers leave unharvested crops on the edges of their crop areas. Weary travelers and the poor are permitted to take these leftovers (glean) for themselves. So Jesus’ group was not stealing. In fact Jesus reminded the Pharisees that David and his men, on one occasion, ate consecrated bread from the Lord’s alter when they were hungry. Their immediate need was more important than the ritual.
Jesus’ response reflects David’s actions; pointing out the need to feed the hungry is more important than human regulations. It directly connects Jesus Himself to God, overruling a senseless law.
Jesus is Sabbath-breaking?
Undeterred by the scrutiny of the Pharisees and teachers of the law who closely continue to watch Him, Jesus teaches in a synagogue on the Sabbath. Witnesses exclaim Jesus, knowing He is being watched, healed a man’s shriveled hand right in front of them!
Bystanders also overheard Jesus’ response, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”
Again, critics are aware of the man-made law: no healings on the Sabbath. Healings, understood to be wondrous blessings from God, are not permitted to be preformed on the Sabbath under the current law-enforcing administration. This bravado act prompted Pharisees and teachers of the law to be furious.
The conclusion can be drawn that this is also what prompted Jesus, the Original Healer, to again totally disregard the man-made law and proclaim He is in charge of God’s Kingdom no matter what day it is.
Twelve men are chosen.
On a side note, Jesus was just spotted going out to the mountain to pray. Let it be known praying is a solid part of Jesus’ daily routine. This morning Jesus called twelve of this disciples to be His apostles:
- Simon (whom he named Peter/Cephas) son of John – Fisherman
- his brother Andrew – Fisherman
- James son of Zebedee – Fisherman
- his brother John – Fisherman
- Philip – Fisherman
- Bartholomew (Nathanael)
- Matthew (Levi) – Tax Collector
- Thomas (a twin)
- James son of Alphaeus
- Thaddaeus (Judas) son of James
- Simon the Zealot
- Judas Iscariot who became a traitor.
It is known throughout the region that Jesus has many disciples, however, these twelve are the twelve God has chosen to further the future Christian movement.
