Give Thanks To The Lord…

Give thanks to the LORD.

1 Chronicles 16:34 Give thanks to the Lord [God], for he is good; his love endures forever.

The phrases “Give thanks to the Lord” and “his love endures forever” appear often in the Bible. You can read eleven specific verses from the New International Version Bible at:

1 Chronicles 16:412 Chronicles 20:21Psalm 106:1Psalm 107:1Psalm 118:01Psalm 118:29Psalm 136:1Psalm 136:2Psalm 136:3, Psalm 136:26Jeremiah 33:11

Giving thanks to others is an action also extended amongst society, and there are many ways we may offer our Thanks

  • Verbally – “Thank You
  • Physically – a hug, handshake or smile
  • Written – by means of an abbreviated text or with a gracious Thank-You card
  • Materially – a token gift

There are many personal creative ways to offer thanks. It really is an unlimited choice on how the task can be accomplished. Obviously, it is the attitude of our thank-you that is more important than any action our thank-you may involve. Sincerity in our gratitude is always the foundation of the action of the Thank-You.

The Bible offers many example stories of true thanks to God:

The Red Sea Exodus Song Of Thankfulness

After God swallowed over six-hundred of Pharaoh’s chariots, along with officers, horsemen and troops during the exodus through the Red Sea – Moses and the Israelites sang a song of thanks to God. Exodus 15:1-3 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD: “I will sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea.”The LORD is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him. The LORD is a warrior; the LORD is his name.

The Thankfulness of Jehoshaphat

The Moabites, Ammonites and some of the Meunites were coming to attack Jehoshaphat. Jehoshaphat ordered Judah to fast as he sought help from the LORD. God took on the battle for Jehoshaphat, having the enemies fight amongst themselves, giving Jehoshaphat victory with no casualties and plunder to spare. 2 Chronicles 20:21 After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the LORD and to praise him for the splendor of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying: “Give thanks to the LORD, for his love endures forever.”

One Thankful Leper

On the road to Jerusalem, ten men with leprosy saw Jesus at a distance. They called to Jesus asking for pity and instantly Jesus healed them.  Luke 17:14-17 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?

These are examples of thankfulness during difficult situations. We grow in our relationship with God each time we acknowledge it is HIM who gets us through. Our battles may never be over on some fronts, for example my MS will never go away. But everyday, I thank the LORD I am redeemed by His blood.

Trying to understand this disease lead me to follow a healthier style of eating lots and lots of vegetables and fruits and much less saturated fat per day. So now I am thankful for this healthier diet. And I take supplements along with getting more exercise than before my diagnosis. I also pay more attention to when my body says to slow down and get to bed at a restful hour. I am thankful this disease lead me to such positive thinking instead of feeling bad for myself.

I am thankful this disease

Thanks to God should not simply apply to only the good that happens in life: 1 Thessalonians 5:18  Paul says, “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus“. We need to give thanks that His presence resides in us regardless our circumstance. Thankful for the good and bad as we try to discover  the good He accomplishes through the bad.

Psalm 100:4-5 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

The Bible tells us the LORD’s love is forever. Till our dying breath we should be thankful for this truth and praise His holy name. For inspiration to thank God for all that He is, listen to Forever, written and sung by Chris Tomlin. What a wonderful praise song to offer Him each and every day.
