Have you ever thought about the name of God verses the attributes of God? By their definitions, these should be two separate things:

Attribute – |ˈatrəˌbyo͞ot| noun quality or feature regarded as a characteristic or inherent part of someone or something
Name – nām| noun word or set of words by which a person, animal, place, or thing is known, addressed, or referred to

Attribute words explain God’s nature; each define a part of His expansive character. And His name is how Christians personally call to Him; a form of address. However, many words overlap both categories and are God’s attribute and God’s name. An example is the word Almighty.

In The Jewish Study Bible, Second Edition, we can read Genesis 17:1 as : When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am El Shaddai. Walk in my ways and be blameless. Almighty is the English translation for God’s Hebrew name here – El Shaddai. 

Another example is found in Genesis 21:33. Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Be’er-Sheva, and called there on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God. Our English word Everlasting, is used as the translation name for the original Hebrew text name – El Olam.

What is vital to remember is in truth, not only do these (and many more) attributes describe God, they are God. These words are the essence, the character, of God. Humans are made of basically six elements: oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus. But God is not “made,” God is. Primarily, God’s inherent nature is love. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 1 John 4:16

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:7-8

Take time now to read and comprehend how our Accepting God is All-knowing in our lives. He is Almighty God because He is our Alpha. And because God is our beginning, declare God as the Amazing Author of your life.  By understanding the attributes of who God is, you can better appreciate why we should never use the phrases OMG and Oh My G**!

And each time we refrain from taking God’s name in vain, we Lift Him Up.
