America – God Uses Leaders

Esteemed leaders come and go. They live their appointed time to accomplish a critical task then, by natural order, are gone. Some of the greatest leaders are called to forward a nation. Others are called to shepherd industries like science, education, business, or health. Their achievement may last; their being does not. Even religious leaders claim a last breath on earth (though One in particular regained His).

Once leaders depart, eventually, another leader emerges.

Though leaders differ in person and accomplishments they all have something in common:

God uses whoever He choses as a leader to fulfill His sovereign plan.

God’s plan includes putting in place and setting in motion events, characters, and purpose for certain men and women to became great leaders. This includes leaders on an evil path such as Hitler, Hussein, and Bin Laden. God can and does use evil plans of men to ultimately bring glory to His name.

Biblical times exemplify that statement.

1 Kings 16:30-33 Ahab son of Omri did more evil in the eyes of the LORD than any of those before him. He not only considered it trivial to commit the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, but he also married Jezebel daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and began to serve Baal and worship him. He set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal that he built in Samaria. Ahab also made an Asherah pole and did more to arouse the anger of the LORD, the God of Israel, than did all the kings of Israel before him.

Ahab did more evil than other kings, and, is known for his direct disobedience to God’s command. God had directed Ahab to battle and kill another king. Instead, Ahab made a treaty with that king. This displeased God and eventually Ahab was “randomly” killed in another battle.

Kings 21:25-26 (There was never anyone like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the LORD, urged on by Jezebel his wife. He behaved in the vilest manner by going after idols, like the Amorites the LORD drove out before Israel.)

Keep in mind nothing is new to God. Nothing is unknown before or after any event happens. Ahab had two sons rule after his demise. Both were wicked and followed pagan ways. God then anointed Jehu son of Nimshi, to destroy the house of Ahab. God blessed Jehu for his obedience his dynasty lasted to the fourth generation. For reasons unknown to man God allowed evil to rule Israel. When God had enough He sent king Jehu to eliminate the evil.

God plans who wins and looses battles. He is sovereign. God planned the arrival of our redemptive King, Jesus Christ, so that the battle against sin would be won. God knew we would sin and continue to sin so Jesus came as king for all mankind.

Great leaders make great lands. Babylon was made stronger by evil king Nebuchadnezzar who conquered other nations. Egypt’s pharaohs beautified its landscape with great parotids, temples and landscapes. Great leaders come in different forms.

During America’s birth in 1640 aboard the Mayflower Separatist and pastor William Brewster penned the Mayflower Compact; a covenant made before God acknowledging His sovereignty and the need for America to obey HIm. All the Pilgrims on board signed it.

Babylon exists no more. Egypt, a beautiful country, still exists yet its flame of power has extinguished. America, founded in covenant with God, has flourished, but…is tilting Christian beliefs to self. This, like Babylon and other ancient nations, will lead to our destruction.

God, however, keeps His promises to nations that are faithful. God will do for America’s leaders just as He did for kings David and Solomon of Israel. 2 Chronicles 7:9-20

Deuteronomy 7:9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.

America, pray for our leaders to be followers of God. Ask that they publicly acknowledge His sovereignty over our country. If their hearts are to remain hard to Him, pray that they be replaced by leaders like William Brewster, a Christian devoted first to God and then to country.

Thank God for His mercy and grace to America’s leadership in years past, and praise Him for all He has planned for us in the future.
