I can’t begin to image what it was like to be a disciple of Jesus in the flesh over two thousand years ago. To actually see Him preform unprecedented miracles, hear Him speak wondrous truth, or feel the touch of His tender hands as He humbly washed my feet—all while knowing those same hands raised three people from the dead. It must have been a mind blowing experience for The Twelve.

The divine story of Jesus waking on water is told three times in the Bible. That specific act went against all physical laws which the disciples naturally understood. Jesus was definitely breaking new territory right in front of them. And the good news for us is—Jesus gives His power to all believers so that we can walk on water, too!

The story of Jesus walking on water begins in the evening. He had just finished feeding over five thousand men (not counting women and children) with five loaves of bread and two fish, along with a full day of healing the sick. After Jesus fed the crowd, He then sent the disciples to a boat on the Sea of Galilee to go ahead of Him to Bethsaida.

Matthew 14:23-27 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

The Bible tells us even Jesus’ inner circle faced everyday problems, just as we do today. His disciples set out on their boating journey (there is no mention of initial bad weather), then at some point the winds pick-up and waves start coming straight at them in the dark. Does their situation strike a cord with you?

Are you going through a storm right now, where you are totally in the dark and can’t see when that next obstacle, problem or complication is going to hit you? Please know you are not alone. Jesus is right there, walking on water to reach you and assist you, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

Matthew 14:28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

Peter, the first disciple Jesus called as His own, was a fisherman by trade. His trade skills made him a man very familiar with the natural characteristics of water. In no uncertain terms Peter would surly proclaim water is wet, has no hard substance, and no one should be able to walk on it in its liquid form. That is. . .unless Jesus says so!

Jesus calls us to walk on water.

Matthew 14:29-30 “Come,” he [Jesus] said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

Peter! No! Don’t stop believing in the creator of the water! Jesus brought you out and He will bring you in! Why did you take your eyes off of Jesus when you were in such dire circumstance? Jesus is the source of life who called you to Himself!

No matter your uncomfortable situation, put your faith in Jesus to help you through!

Matthew 14: 31-33 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Matthew tells us that Jesus saved Peter before he sank totally into the water. Yes, Peter was shaken, no doubt scared to death. But in the middle of the darkness as the wind howled and the waves crashed down upon him, Peter called out to Jesus, “Lord, save me!”, and Jesus “caught him”.

Peter took his eyes off Jesus. He got distracted by his surroundings. Yet in the end, Peter truly knew Jesus as The One who could save him. I encourage you right now, what ever your storm is, have the faith that Peter had and put your trust in Jesus.

Don’t take your eyes off Jesus.

Stay focused that He is there by your side, walking on water through your storm with His arm stretched out, waiting for you to grab hold! Trust Him! Say this prayer right now. . .

Father God, humbly I admit I can’t do it on my own. My problem is too big for me and I’m sinking fast. Lord, You alone are Almighty God and I offer my praise to you. Please, specifically I ask you to (tell God your situation). May I not take my eyes off Jesus as I continue to pray for deliverance. In His name, Amen.
