Bring Your Bible To School Day!

Bring your Bible to school day

October 4 is Bring Your Bible To School Day! How fantastic is that?

The event, started by Focus on the Family in 2014,  is growing in popularity.  With every state in the nation involved, 8,000 students participated in 2014, 155,000 in 2015, and 356,000 in 2016, and the number for 2017 almost reached 500,000!

Bring Your Bible To School Day started as a response to America’s schools continuing to forbid religious groups, Bibles, prayer, kneeling for God at football games, or even acknowledging Jesus in the classroom.

This much needed event  is something Christian students may partake in openly.

In 1962 and 1963, the U.S Supreme Court declared Bible readings in public schools to be unconstitutional—and  took Bibles out of the schools.

But we live in America, and American Christians have freedom. Days Of The Year states:

“Their [Focus on the Family] main focus to have students not feel afraid to express themselves and read the Bible during their free time. However, if things turn for the worst for students in public schools, Focus on the Family encourages families to contact the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a legal alliance of Christian attorneys to defend the right to freely live out their faith as well as check out school policies and codes of conduct in their school district.”

Christian students too often are directed to keep their voices quiet in schools, in regards to Jesus. Perhaps this occurs because main points in the academic world differ from Christian world views?  Whatever the reasons, Bring Your Bible To School Day invites Christian students to be God’s light  in their schools!

The Bible offers many stories of young people living their faith.

David, at approximately seventeen years of age, is a prefect example demonstrated by his fight against the evil Philistine giant, Goliath:

1 Samuel 17:45 David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

Despite David’s age, he alone had the courage to run “quickly to the battle line”,  because David knew God was always with him. I encourage young Christians to do the same on October 4.  Face the “norms” of everyday school, just as David faced Goliath, and instead of keeping your love of Christ to yourself, share that the Lord is always there for everyone.

Revelation 3:20-21 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne.

Joshua, also a young man of faith in God, was Moses’ aide.  Joshua had confidence God would deliver the new promised land to Abraham’s descendants, which God eventually did, and Joshua became a great leader:

Joshua 1:16 Then they answered Joshua, “Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.

Mary, a young woman, was told by an angel that she would give birth to a son. Knowing she was a virgin, Mary questioned how could this be. After being told no word from God will ever fail, Mary said:

Luke 1:38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

God uses people, old and young, to accomplish His purpose and expand His kingdom.

Young people, you can make the difference in your classmates eternity by expanding God’s kingdom in your school, allowing them to see the works of Christ through you.

Jesus has much faith  you can fulfill His plan:

1 Timothy 4:12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

Government schools cannot censor students from engaging in voluntary, free speech (written or verbal) regarding their deeply held religious beliefs.

Read your Bibles with friends:

  • In a free period

  • Before school in homeroom

  • During the lunch period

As long as your personal or group reading does not interrupt class or cause a disruption to any academic instruction, dear Christian students, you have the right to publicly read your Bible at school!

  2. How amazing! Thanks for sharing. Here in the UK we don’t have such a day, however I’ve had the privilege of working in a Church of England primary school where prayer and seeking the Lord in the running to day running of the school were positively encouraged by our lovely Christian head teacher. Sadly, the bible is largely ignored in most British schools, except for the purpose of teaching religious education, which also includes the other mainstream religions. The bible itself is not studied with any real meaning and there is no requirement for an R.E. teacher to be a Christian or, indeed, to have a faith of any kind!

    • Hello and thank your for your comment from the UK! Sadly, religious studies using the Bible here in America are usually left only to private religious schools, such as a Catholic elementary school. That is why having this special day for students to bring their Bible to public school is, to me, a wonderfully BIG DEAL!
