God told us what will happen!

God told us what will happen!

Christians know the book of Revelation in the New Testament. John the apostle, wrote it when he was about 90 years old as a prisoner of Rome on the island of Patmos in the Aegean Sea. Like his first book, John, Revelation reveals the full identity of Christ, plus (in short), Revelation proclaims how final judgement occurs for believers and unbelievers when Christ returns.

However, an important book of the Old Testament too often overlooked on the topic of eternal destiny is Deuteronomy. Written by Moses, he encouraged the Israelites to follow God’s law – and if they ignored God, God states exactly what will happen.

This is information we NEED to remember – today!

Deuteronomy 28:1-6 If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.

All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the LORD your God:

You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.

The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.

Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed. You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.

We will be blessed if we obey God. Granted, not many of us today have herds and flocks or kneading troughs, but you get the picture.

God will bless our days IF – our choice is to obey His way.

Moses then continues with the second half of the message given to him from God; proclaiming what will happen if the LORD is not obeyed:

Deuteronomy 28:15-19 However, if you do not obey the LORD your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you:

You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country.

Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed.

The fruit of your womb will be cursed, and the crops of your land, and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.

You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out.

God will curse our days IF – our choice is to disobey His way.

Deuteronomy 28:3,16 is confirmation of God’s covenant with Abraham in Genesis 12:2-3, in regards to  blessings and curses.  As a whole, Deuteronomy 28 emphasizes the Israelites must follow the Mosaic Law (Ten Commandments) which was written in stone if they want to be blessed, or, they will be cursed for their disobedience.

So how does this particular chapter matter to us today?

When Jesus came the Good News was revealed and a New Covenant was made.  All people who now believe:

  • Jesus is God’s son in the flesh,
  • who chose to accept our punishment and die in place of mankind for our sin,
  • then resurrected,

become children of God!

Now because of Jesus, instead of having laws written on stone as given to Moses, God’s laws are written on our hearts allowing us to have a personal relationship with Jesus our savior.

Deuteronomy 28 still relates to today’s world.

In the twenty-first century it’s hard to fathom being blessed and cursed in the descriptions used in Deuteronomy, because, again, most of us do not grow crops or keep belongings in baskets. Instead of trying to relate to the setting, focus on the two main words and recognize their definitions.  That will absolutely help to understand what God is saying.

blessedadjective, endowed with divine favor and protection

cursedadjective,  damned

It was 3,200 years ago that God told us what will happen to us in the future.

It is now your choice to decide which path for eternal life you will take. Will you follow God’s word and be set apart with divine favor and protection, or, will you choose to reject His word and be damned?

I hope you choose His blessings, because God loves YOU!
