Humility Over Pride

“Pride makes us artificial and humility makes us real.” – Thomas Merton

Pride is considered one of the seven deadly sins. When one is prideful, one places oneself above God. There is that belief that talent, accomplishments, sometimes even existence is self-achieved. However, followers of Jesus Christ know this belief is mistaken.

Here is the worldly dictionary definition of self pride. Pride is a word the world often sees as good.

a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements…or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired.

That definition centers only on self. Note the phrase, “from one’s own achievements“. No consideration of God is extended.

Biblical understanding of pride is different. The Bible sees pride as, “taking the glory that belongs to God alone and keeping it for ourselves. Pride is essentially self-worship.”

Pride is artificial. It is not created by God. Pride is created by man to exalt oneself. And God is not in favor of self-worship. He alone is worthy to be praised. Did man create himself? Did man place the celestial bodies in the sky? Can man add one more day to life? No to all. God is in control.

God alone deserves glory for all things. That includes our talents, accomplishments, our very existence. Don’t attempt to take away His glory from your life. Adopt the posture of humility. Remain in a posture of humility over pride…then you will be in His favor.

NT...JAMES 4:6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: "God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble."

OT...PROVERBS 3:34 He mocks proud mockers but shows favor to the humble and oppressed.

ARE YOU A FOLLOWER OF JESUS?

Have you invited Jesus into your heart? Now is the perfect time. Pray this sinner’s prayer found at Gotquestions.com

“God, I know that I am a sinner. I know that I deserve the consequences of my sin. However, I am trusting in Jesus Christ as my Savior. I believe that His death and resurrection provided for my forgiveness. I trust in Jesus and Jesus alone as my personal Lord and Savior. Thank you Lord, for saving me and forgiving me! Amen.”

Blessings to you as you receive redemption through Jesus.
