Lies Are Lies

“We have got nowadays so that we divide lies into white lies and black lies, society lies and business lies, etc. The Word of God knows no such letting-down of the standard.” – D.L. Moody, Weighed and Wanting

I am guilty of lies. Though one believes some lies are acceptable over others D. L. Moody stated we, “divide lies into white lies and black lies, society lies and business lies”, but lies are still lies.

It’s hard to go through one day without lies. We lie to kids to keep them from indulging…”There’s no more ice cream.” But there is ice cream.

We lie to bosses about our failure on the job…”My report is almost finished.” But the report hasn’t even been started.

We lie to spouses to avoid a deeper discussion…”I’m too tired to go out.” That’s because the game is on.

Lies come naturally to mankind, often without realizing lies are lies. But remember…God doesn’t take lies lightly. His ninth commandment states not to bear false witness against a neighbor. That means: Do not lie. God offers no wiggle room here. He commands us to speak truth in all circumstances, so we must find that truthful path in our speech.

PROVERBS 12:22-23 The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy. The prudent keep their knowledge to themselves, but a fool's heart blurts out folly.

Sometimes telling the truth requires thoughtful distraction. “Yes, there is ice cream, but we are saving it for after dinner. Right now, let’s play a game of Checkers.”

Often it requires determined courage to admit a failure. “I am getting a late start on the report. I’m sorry, but I assure you it will be turned in on time.”

It’s important not to start, and/or continue, telling lies to your spouse. What a husband or wife considers little lies can soon evolve into whoppers they tell to their spouse. Lies result in marital trust becoming an issue. Keep dialogue open and honest between each other.

Lies are lies. God detests lies, but He delights in truth. If you lie, bring it to God as quickly as possible. He is open to forgive once we confess, repent, and say we will never (at least do our best) lie again.
