Honor God’s Name

“God’s name is so important that in heaven the very mention of it evokes worship.” – Bill Bright, The Joy Of Faithful Obedience, founder of CRU

When God’s son, Jesus Christ, gave the Sermon on the Mount on a hillside near Capernaum to crowds of people, He included a model of how to pray and honor God’s holy name. That prayer is often referred to as the Lord’s Prayer.

MATTHEW 6:9-13 This then is how you should pray: ” ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’

Written in the book of Matthew, the Lord’s Prayer specifically discloses how to pray using God’s name. Christians, beginning with preschool Sunday School class, have all heard and prayed the Lord’s Prayer. As time went on each of us read, recited, and understood that it tells us to honor the Father’s holy name.

Believers, Sunday School foundations are important. Remembering early biblical teachings helps us choose the right paths as we age. Remembering Jesus’ words from that sermon on the mount, regarding the Lord’s Prayer, keeps us focused on honoring and respecting God’s name. It reminds us not to use His name in a mocking, playful, or hurtful way.

One day, when Christ returns, even those condemned will acknowledge the authority of His name. They will no longer use the name Jesus Christ in a vulgar way, for they will see who Christ truly is – the son of God.

PHILIPPIANS 2:9-11 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

“The name that is above every name.” Another fundamental Sunday School teaching. We should all respect the name of Jesus Christ.

Christians, let us get back to remembering basic Bible teachings. Let us get back to honoring God’s name.
