Palm Sunday – Jesus’ Triumphal Entry

“For much of Jesus’ ministry He urged people to be quiet about who He was. When He healed he told people not to say anything, when He confronted demons who recognized Him as the Son of God He told them to shut up. That’s because it wasn’t time for Him to declare Himself as the Messiah. On Palm Sunday the time had come.”

Tom Fuller, The Significance of Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday is the Sunday before Easter. Though Easter is the most holy of days, the day of Jesus’ resurrection, Palm Sunday is the day Jesus makes His Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem to proclaim Himself Messiah.

On Palm Sunday Jesus, knowing fully what would soon take place, road into Jerusalem on an unridden foal of a donkey to proclaim His deity. The crowds in Jerusalem, well aware of the wonders Jesus preformed, His healings and teachings, gave Jesus a kingly welcome; and they laid their cloaks and palm branches on the ground, and waved them in the air at His arrival.

Throughout His ministry Jesus often told the people not to tell others of His miracles, but today, Palm Sunday, would be different. Today was the day Jesus chose to become fully known.

JOHN 12:23-28 Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.

"Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!"

Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again."

Yes, the people were welcoming Jesus a king, but not as the King of kings. Their royal welcome was for a man they expected to deliver them from the hands of the Roman empire. It was not meant as a welcome to God, there to sacrifice Himself for their sin.

Jesus came in His Triumphal Entry not to conquer man, but to conquer the sin of man. A blessing Christians recognize each Palm Sunday.
