AMERICA–Give Thanks For What We Have

America, let’s give thanks to God for all that is good in our country. Many foreigners dream of America as the “Land of opportunity.” We are a place where you don’t have to be born of noble blood to hold a position of authority– think Abraham Lincoln, one of our greatest presidents. No wonder people of many nations, specifically nations that are oppressed, continue to flood our borders.

In America if one works hard, applies ingenuity and takes responsibility, that dream becomes a reality–think Levi Strauss. Born in Germany, Strauss came to the United States to become a citizen who built a jeans company now worth 6 billion dollars.

America may have some faults but thankfully God never stops blessing the people, businesses, economics, resources, or virtues of this great nation.

From it’s conception America has acknowledged God as Supreme Creator:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

I am thankful our forefathers understood the importance of giving God the glory for His gift of “rights” to us. We did nothing to earn these rights. It is only through God’s mercy and grace that He bestowed them upon us.

Because this nation about to be born declared its God given rights, citizens are able to elect our own officials. The idea of supreme leadership by kings or dictators would not occur under America’s carefully thought out Founding Documents. What a blessing to America we can vote our opinions.

To continue receiving these blessings from God,perhaps as a nation who prays, we should follow what Jesus taught us to do?

In the Gospels we read how Jesus gives thanks. What is interesting about His thanks is that He offers it to God first, then a miracle occurs. An example is His thanks appears in His prayers to God before He feeds the 4,000 and before He raises Lazarus from the dead:

Jesus offers thanks before the miracles occurred.

John 11:41-44 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

We are a nation that prospers with equal opportunities. Employment, living quarters, education, finances, healthcare, religion; America prospers in each category. Studies show America’s poor are richer than most Europeans. Perhaps, to follow Jesus’ example of thanks, we should thank God for the job we have before we ask for the new job. Or thank God for everything about our bodies that work before we ask for specific healing.

Feeding 4,000 people with seven fish and a few loaves of bread, bringing a dead man back to life–these are miracles. If we truly believe in following the thankful prayer examples of Jesus, imagine how blessed we would be in America if we thanked God for what we already have, acknowledging his goodness, before we ask for more.

The Bible tells us in all circumstances we are to come before the Lord with thanksgiving:

Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

To be honest, America already receives many blessings. With our abundance we are able to freely share and bless others. When disaster strikes in our country or in countries around the world, Americans always respond. Our nation understands we are prosperous; we have the ability at a moments notice to organize military and private and religious organizations to help those in need. My country does not withhold aid to others. It has a long standing tradition of offering assistance and encouragement.

So today let’s give thanks to God for the freedom we enjoy, the rights our forefathers put into writing and shed blood for–especially our right to pray to Him openly throughout our land. Then after we give thanks let’s pray for those in America who are working towards removing those rights–elected officials who have no shame in trampling the Founding Documents by trying to create laws that offer no glory to God and go against His word.

Father God, thank you for creating America in Your name. When it was formed You blessed the citizens of this new nation with rights we could not and did not earn. It is by Your grace we have freedoms, specifically the freedom to worship You. Thank you, LORD. But there are those in government and positions of authority who choose to ignore Your blessings while trying to implement their own laws and orders. Please forgive them, Lord. May none of their weapons formed against You prosper and may You reign supreme in America forever and always. Amen.
