You Are Worthy, Our Lord and God

You are worthy, our Lord and God

“God’s name is so important that in heaven the very mention of it evokes worship.” – The Joy of Faithful Obedience by Dr. Bill Bright

Imagine if every time we hear the name of God or His title name God, we embrace the desiring need to worship Him that very moment. How glorious! That is a truth Dr. Bill Bright shared in his book The Joy of Faithful Obedience

Judging by his credentials, I believe Dr. Bright did not randomly create that bold statement just to be daring. No, Dr. Bright had a detailed history of studying the Bible. And as he interpreted and comprehended God’s Word, thankfully, he was moved to share his understanding  with others.

Facts about Dr. Bill Bright:

  • was the founder of Campus Crusade for Christ International, the world’s largest Christian ministry, serving 191 countries with a full-time staff of 27,000 and 225,000 volunteers
  • commissioned the JESUS film, a documentary on the life of Christ, translated into more than 800 languages
  • studied at Princeton and Fuller Seminaries and held 6 honorary doctorate degrees
  • authored more than 100 books
  • his pamphlet – The Four Spiritual Laws, has been translated into 200 languages. Editorial Review

Dr. Bright’s understanding and sharing of the importance of God’s name helps us to better follow our Lord’s third commandment:

%22You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. Exodus 20_7-2

God specifically tells us not to take His name in vain. Yet turn on your television, read a text, over hear conversations in a cafe, hair salon, or simply while standing in a check-out line. It will not be very long before we hear or see the derogatory overflow of  God’s name misused in various sources.

We were lovingly created by God as His most precious creation. Why then, do we choose to vomit His name from the very mouths that He formed? When we vomit God’s name, our usage does not “evokes worship.”

When we vomit up “Oh my G**!” as an exasperation in excitement or commonness we offer our Lord no glory. By spewing this phrase carelessly we demonstrate a desire to pull His name down. We truly are not thinking of God; we are selfishly displaying a momentary emotion, be it happiness or anger. This is quite the opposite of what Dr. Bright indicates in his statement.

“God’s name is so important that in heaven the very mention of it evokes worship.” – His statement gives insight to the true definition of who God is. A name so totally above all names that any reference, any indication, any alluding, or even at the mere thought of His name, heaven bows in worship. It’s never a momentary emotional response that His name is spoken in heaven, like it is here on earth when we vomit the title name God. Revelation 4:11 reads:

“You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”

God is worthy because He is All. The powers in heaven understand this. So they worship His name with all that they have each time they hear it. And this glorious reaction of instant worship displays truth to God’s power! This reaction is what the name of God deserves in heaven and on earth.
